, WASHINGTON, DC 20510-3002 HELSINK1 COMMIS$10N May 17, 1995 Mr. James Taylor Director Nuclear Regulatory Commission 11555 Rockville Pike Rockville, Maryland 20852
Dear Mr. Taylor:
I am writing on behalf of Louis A. Amato, Committeeman for the Township of Lacey, New Jersey, regarding the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station Spent Fuel Rods Storage Facility.
Mr. Amato is concerned about the storage of spent fuel rods in Lacey Township and the surrounding area.
In this light, Mr.
Amato is troubled by the Administration's plan to allow for the import of as much as 21 tons of used nuclear fuel from Europe over a thirteen year period.
The Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station (OCNGS) is the largest employer in southern Ocean County and may be forced to close by 1996.when the space to store spent fuel is filled.
He suggests that the United States must consider its own fuel storage needs before it extends an invitation to other countries to accommodate theirs.
I would appreciate any help you can offer to respond to my constituent's concerns.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely, I
I l

Daar Senator Lt.utenbergs
,y, The issue of storing spent fuel rods in the United States has become a serious concern for Lacay ?cunship, as well as those
(
neighboring townships that also house a 1tuciaar Generating Station. 'This being the caso. I was vary concerned when an j'
articia in the April 13, 1995 sdition of the ).sbury Press Press w:.s brought to my attention (copy attached), indicating that the l-clinton adriinistration intends to approva i plan later this year that et11s for as much as 31 tons of used nuclear fuel to be l
brought into the United statas from Bure'e over a 13-year period.
p As you are aware, Lacay Township is homa to tha Oyster Craek huelear Generating station (ocdGs) which provides appreximately 12 million dolla.rs in revenue to the Tounthip, and is the largast
[ l wployer in southern Ocean County.
OCMOS tay be forced to shut down as early as 1996 because it has no rcom to store spent fuel.
Tha Faderal Government has takan decadas and spent hundreds of millions of dollar's, yet there is no placa for us to store ont fuel.
My concern, as well as the concern of the Mayor and Township e.ommittee, and many Lacey Township residents, is how can the Federal Gervernmant iuport and store fuel from other countries hara, when Nuclear Generating Stations in the United States are r
I being forced to store spent fuel on site?
Mhare are they planning to store this fuel, and why can't OCNGS stora its fuel l
there?
