Dear Mr. Giambusso:
Subject:
Environme-tal Deviation a
The following deviation was reported to Mr. Phil Stohr, NRC, Region 1 Office of Inspection and Enforcement on February 26, 1975
Reference:
License Nurnber DPR-44/56
- Environmental Technical Specifications: 4.1 Report No.:
50-277/278-75-5 Report Date:
March.7, 1975 Deviation Date: February 26, 1975 F aci l it y:
Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station Units 2/3 R. D. 1, Delta, Pennsylvania 17314 Identification of Deviation:
Impingement of fishes.
Conditions Prior to Deviation:
Both units operating at approximately full load.
Description of Deviation:
During a period of very high river flow (approximately 380,000 cf s) caused by heavy rains and melt ing snow, the plant intake screen accumulated an extremely heavy load of river trash consisting primarily of ' eaves and small tree limbs. Mixed with this trash were small river fish in excess of the minimum reporting limit :f four cubic feet per 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
.

H;rch 7, 1975 Pcg: 2 The quantity of fish collected increased from approximately one-quarter cubic feet per 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
on February 25 to a maximum of 3
1975 The quantity of fish collected 24.4 f t / 24 hrs. on February 26, 3 dominished to approximately 1.4 f t /24 hrs, by February 27, 1975 During the period of high collection, the fish were surveyed for number, size and species.
It was determined that approximately 70%
of the fish were channel catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus). The si ze of the fish collected ranged from approximately 1.2 inches to 10 inches, with the major portion of the fish being between 2.4 and 2.8 inches.
A fourty minute sample taken at Unit 3 on February 26, 1975 contained approximately 930 fish.
Designation of Apparent Cause of Deviation:
The abnormally high river flow carried an unusual amount of trash onto the intake screens, in some cases trapping the fish. Our consultant. has also observed that during periods of sudden increase in river flow, the fish tend to concentrate along the shoreline, thereby, increasing the likelihood of entrapment.
Analysis of the Deviation:
This deviation was due to an early thaw, combined with heavy rains and is not expected to be repeated more than once per year. The

Corrective Action:
None applicable.
Failure Data:
None previously.
Very truly yours,
