Subject:
Docket No. 50-267 Valve Wall Thickness, Nuclear Safety Related Valves Ref.:
(A) USAEC Letter dated 11-14-72 (B PSC Letter dated 12-13-72 (C PSC Letter dated 12-29-72 (D USAEC Letter dated 3-1-73
Dear Mr. Flora:
In accordance with Reference (C) and subsequent follow-up meetings we have completed our review of those valves important to nuclear safety, and we have verified that those valves identified as such meet the minimum wall thickness requirements of all applicable codes and standards.
A total of ten valves (HV-2301 through HV-2310) were identified as re-quiring demonstration of acceptable wall thickness. These valves are listed on the attached tabulation which indicaten valve type, service conditions and the minimum wall thickness found. We were unable to produce vall thickness verification from manufacturing records. Wall thicknesses were obtained by actual measurement using a K-Meter (Krautkramer Meter as manufactured by Krautkramer Ultrasonics Incorporated) per the techniques and requirements of pursgraphs (1), (2), (3) and (4) of Reference (A). The meter was calibrated, and is capable of accuracies in the range of 10.005" for the thicknesses measured. It should be noted while the valves were purchased for a 600// USAS rating the valves were produced using 1500// USAS rated forged body stock so that in all cases the measured vall thickness was considerably in excess of minimum requirements.
The details of the measurements, measurement locations, valve sketches, etc., are available in our field office. These records along with any other pertinent information can be made available for review and inspection at '
your convenience.
Very truly yours, 4
