Subject:
Catawba Nuclear Station, Unit 1 Docket Number 50-413 Use of BWNT Topical Report for Upcoming Fuel Cycle The NRC staff currently has under review B&W Nuclear Technology's topical report BAW-10168P-A, "B&W Loss-of-Coolant Accident Evaluation Model for Recirculating Steam Generator Plants," Revision 2. This revision was submitted by BWNT in October 1992.
The purpose of this letter is to advise the NRC of Duke's intent and need to utilize the methodology changes in this revision for the upcoming cycle (10) of Catawba Nuclear Station, Unit 1. (The refueling outage for this cycle is scheduled to begin in June of 1996.)
Catawba Unit 1 Cycle 10 will be the first Duke (Westinghouse NSSS) cycle to use a full batch of axial blanket fuel. Use of the axial blanket fuel will raise local power peaking in the core, and approval of the revised LOCA methodology is needed to assure that full power capabilityis not impacted.
L Duke has recently been informed by BWNT that the NRC is considering suspending i
review of the topical report because of resource limitations. Duke requests that review l
and approval of this revision be completed by December 15,1995. This date is j
predicated upon the time required to perform reload design analyses using this i
methodology, and to submit and process Technical Specification (TS) changes to incorporate the revision into TS 6.9.1.9 (Core Operating Limits Report). It is very much l
desired that the revision be approved before the analyses are performed, to obviate the possibility of some late change in the topical report invalidating a large amount of effort,-
and possibly affecting Duke's ability to operate the unit.
Ifyou have any questions, or would like to discuss this, please call Scott Gewehr at (704) 382-7581, or Mary Hazeltine at (704) 382-6111.
Very truly yours, b.
