U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Directorate of Regulatory Operations 7920 Norfolk Avenue Bethesda, Maryland 20014 Attention of Mr. Donald F. Knuth, Director Gentlemen:

NO. 1 AUXILIARY FEEDWATER STORAGE TANK NO. 1 UNIT l SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATI0h In compliance with AEC Regulation 100FR50(e), a verbal report was submitted on April 11, 1974 to Region 1, Directorate of '

Regulatory Operations concerning a crack in a roof plate of No. 1 Auxiliary Feedwater Tank at Salem Nuclear Generating' Station.

Our investigation cf the crack in the roof-plate of No. 1 Auxiliary Feedwater Tank revealed that in the process of removing a construction lug on one plate, the base material was torn.

, The construction lugs were welded to the roof plate segments-to facilitate field forming of the roof during construction.

This type of lug was welded to the roof segments only.

To ensure that no other tears were in the-roof plates of'this and five othe r similar tanks, all areas where the lugs were.

welded to the plates were visually inspected and a random sampling of twelve areas, two on each; tank, were dye penetrant inspected. No other tears were found.

The one crack in the tank roof- plate of No. - l Auxiliary Feedwater Storage Tank was ground out-and repaired.

From our visual inspection program of all locations:where con-struction lugs _ were welded to the roof and from the results of the dye penetrant inspection of twelve random areas, .we are-satisfied that this was an isolated occurrence and that these-tanks ~are structurally sound. L h
