ABNOR!@.L OCCURRENCE REPORT Report No.-BFAO-73h8W Report Date--January 4, 1974 Occurrence Date--December 25, 1973 Facility--Browns Ferry nuclear Plant unit 1 Identification of Occurrence HPCI failure.
Conditions Prior to Occurrence The unit was operating at 158o 1.st and 44o Ise.
Description of Occurrence At approxi= ate],y 11:00 p.m., the HPCI turbine failed to reach. rated speed and flow during routine surveillance testing. The control valve came open on initiation, but returned 4-ediately to the closed position.
Desienation of Antarent Cause of Occurrence A resistor was open in the Woodward unit which supplies the 48-volt de power to the EG-M governor control box. Therefore, the governor was unable to give the control valve a proper control signal.-
Analysis of Occurrence Safe shutdown of the reactor would have been possible because the re=aining emergency core cooling systems were-operable.
Corrective Action The resistor box was replaced and a surveillance test was performed to demonstrate operability.
The turbine performed satisfactorily.
Failure Data Resistor box, Woodward,-Part No. 8270-282.
