7 DOCKET NO.: 50-0331 DATE: 06Z1.5121 Unit: Duane Arnold Energy Center COMPLETED BY: Richard Woodward TELEPHONE: (319)851-7318 Monthly Operational Overview for May 1995:

l On May 1, the Duane Arnold Energy Center was operating at full power, having returned to service twelve days earlier following Refueling Outage Thirteen.

He plant continued full power operation until May 14 at 2258 when the 'B' Reactor Feed Pump (RFP) tripped, causing an automatic scram on low vessel water level. Reactor vessel level recovery was hampered by problems with the 'A' Feedwater Regulator Valve Controller. The turbine subsequently tripped on high reactor water level.

All other systems responded normally. The RFP had tripped on low lube oil pressure, and the cause was determined to be stripping of the internal gears in the coupling between the RFP shaft and lube oil pump.

Following maintenance on the 'B' RFP, the 'A' RFP was inspected to ensure no similar potential problem existed.

The plant returned to service May 18,1995 at 0445 and to full power May 20. (LER 95-05)

During the May 27/29 Memorial holiday weekend, power was decreased at the request of the load dispatcher for lack of grid demand.

After otherwise having operated continuously at full power for ten days, the plant commenced a shutdown May 31 after increases in reactor water sulfates and hotwell conductivity indicated a tube leak in the Low Pressure Condenser. The generator was taken off-line June 1 at 0528. (The plant returned to service June 6 after cleaning the condenser water boxes, identifying the leaking tube, and plugging it.)
