OCT 18 1983 NOTE T0:
R. H. Vollmer, D/DE FROM:
B. D. Liaw, BC/MTEB THRU:
W. V. Johnston, AD/MCET M
SUBJECT:
PEACH BOTTOM 2 POST IHSI CRACKS We have very little information other than that covered by the PNO..
We heard that several additional welds have also been found to by cracked.
Region I (J. Durr and Sam Reynolds) are on top of this.
They called us this morning (10/13) and we discussed how we would coordinate action.
Region I is obtaining all relevant raw UT data of these welds. We are asking the following questions:
1.
Are they really cracked?
2.
Were they really missed before?
3.
If'they were missed, why? who? how?
4.
What is the relevance to other welds in PB 2?
5.
Any generic implications?
We are not in a position to express any conclusions yet.
We don't want to jump to wrong conclusions on the basis of information that later may be found to be incorrect.
There is considerable evidence that IHSI does not propagate cracks anymore than would be normally associated with " stretching" a crack open.
There also is evidence to show that IHSI could make cracks easier to find.
We will request the PM to schedule a meeting with Region I and PECO very early next week.
