Discrepancies in the BN System

Dear Mr. Seidle:

This letter provides an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) item concerning documentation and hardware discrepancies in the Borated Refueling Water System (BN). This matter was initially reported pur-suant to 10CFR50.55(e) on January 21, 1983, and interim reports were provided in References 1), 2) and 3).

As stated in Reference 3), the documentation and hardware discrepancies identified in the BN system have been evaluated and none would have adversely affected safety of operations had they gone uncorrected.

However, as part of the corrective actions resulting from discrepancies identified in the BN eystem, KGE conducted walkdowns of all safety-related systems turned over prior to the identification of deficiencies in the turnover process. These walkdowns have identified one additional potential safety concern involving sway strut washers. Although the washers have been reported as a separate potential 10CFR50.55(e), the discrepancy was identified as a result of corrective action for BN system turnover deficiencies. Therefore, KGE cannot conclude the subject 10CFR50.55(e) evaluation until the safety significance of the sway strut washer concern is known. It is anticipated that the washer evaluation will be completed within the next month.
