Narbut and R. Tucker on August 2, 1983.

Dear Sir:

The NRC was notified of a potentially reportable deficiency in the referenced telephone conversation. At that time, it was estimated that a determination of reportability would be made within thirty (30) days.

Due_to the extensive investigation and evaluation required, an Interim Report is attached. -It is now expected that this information will be finalized by June 28, 1984, at which time a complete report will be submitted.

INTERIM REPORT -DER 83-51 POTENTIAL REPORTABLE DEFICIENCY ARIZONA PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY (APS)

PVNGS UNIT 1 I. Potential _ Problem

1) NCR SM-2396 documents that the turbine driven Auxiliary Feedwater Pump shaft bounces rapidly back and forth at the 135 GPM minimum flow causing the suction piping to vibrate severely.
2) NCR SM-2282 documents that the turbine driven Auxiliary Feedwater Pump, IMAFAP01, does not develop 1 1420 psig discharge pressure at a flowrate of 875 gpm as required by Hot Functional Test 91HF-1Af01. The acceptance criteria is obtained from the PVNGS FSAR, Section 10.4.9.1.1.G.

Appr,oach jro _and .Statys Of _Prgposed Resolution Bechtel engineering is currently corresponding with Bingham Williamette and reviewing the PVNGS FSAR to deterime reportability and technical- justification for corrective action. In the meantime, steps are being taken to conduct additional pump tests and to acquire more accurate test data.
