20545 Unusual Occurrence UO-73-21 Docket Nuc.ber 50-293 License DPR-35_, Amendment N_o_.

1 HFCI System Inverter Trip In accordance with Pilgrim Nucicar Pcwcr Station Technical Specification 6.6.C.1, we hereby report that the High Pressure Coolant Injection System was inoperable on December 3, 1973 for approximately six minutes.

SuOnary_of Occurrence At 1400 hours0.0162 days <br />0.389 hours <br />0.00231 weeks <br />5.327e-4 months <br /> on December 3,1973, an HPCI inverter failure annunciation was received in the main control room. The HPCI inverter converts DC power to AC power for the HPCI controls. The reactor was at 507. power at the time of the occurrence.

I_nvest_iyat_ ion and Corrective Action Immediate investigation revealed that the HPCI inverter trip resulted when station personnel increased the voltage on 125 DC battery system 'A' to ap-proximately 140 volts while equalizing the charge on the batteries. The 'A' battery system voltage was promptly reduced and the HPCI system was returned to standby service at 1406 hours0.0163 days <br />0.391 hours <br />0.00232 weeks <br />5.34983e-4 months <br />.

Station personnel have been advised that increasing the 125 volt DC battery system voltage above 135 volts can result in failure of the HPCI or RCIC inverters. Caution tags to indicate this have been placed on the battery chargers and permanent tags have been ordered.

The station Operations Review Committee has reviewed the occurrence and con-curs that the action taken is adequate and appropriate.
