Dear Mr. O'Ieary:

TENNESSEE VALI2.T NJTHORITY - BROWIIS FERRY IiUCLEAR PIMT U: LIT 1 -

DOCKET :!0 50-259 - FACILITY OPERATII;G LICENSE DPR ABNORMAL OCCURRENCE REPORT BFAO-739W The purpose of this report is to provide details concerning the failure of a fuse in the power circuit supplying unit 2 HPCI inverter power supply at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant. This occurrence was reported by telephone and telegram on September 8, 1973, to the Region II Directorate of Regulatory Operations, Atlanta, Georgia.

Description of Incident At 6:15 a.m. CDI on September 8,1973, with the reactor at 126 psig during startup testing, a fuse was blown in the power circuit supplying the HPCI inverter power cupply. The HPCI was not in operation at that tinc. The inverter converts de to ac power for use in the HPCI speed control module. The HPCI was declared inoperable and reactor pressure was i==ediately reduced to less than 122 psig.

Investigation and Corrective Action The blown fuse was located and replaced. The maintenance section was notified of the problem and found the power supply back in service and functioning properly. The HPCI was declared operable at 10:00 a.m. CDI on September 8,1973 Contacts with the =anufacturer tend to point to a generic probles with this 250V de inverter. General Electric Company and Topaz Manufacturing Company are =aking several changes to this inverter =odel.

These are:

1.

Relocation of certain resistors within the chassis that are causing s

heating p'roblems to other components.

DOCKET NO. 50-259 - FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE DPR AEI;0PNAL OCCURRENCE REPORT EFAC-739u 2.

Drilling ventilation holes in the chassis to peznit better airflow around components.

3 Changing out components that may have been affected by overheating.

Material and instructions are being mailed from Topaz; and changes should be complete by September 19, 1973 Final conclusions vill be submitted after enanges have been made and evaluated in service.

Increased testing is not considered beneficial in the interim since loss of this inverter power supply is annunciated in the unit control room.

Very truly yours, TENNFESEE VALLEY NJTHORITY
