incidents of a similar nature which occurred on July 26, 27, and 28, when a number of gizzard shad minnovs vere killed when impinged on the Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant unit 1 intake screens. This report is required by section 5.6.3(b) of our environmental technical specifications.

The first two incidents were 2coorted to Region II Regulatory Operations Office by telephone at approximately 2 p.m., July 27, 1973.

The third incident was reported at approximately 12 m.,

July 30, 1973, during a discussion of the two preceding events.

  • Description of Incident On July 26, 1973, at 5 a.m., while washing the circulating water pump traveling screens at the pumping station, an estimated 2,000 shad minnovs, from one to two inches long, and 50 fish of other species, primarily drum, vere impinged on one of the screens.

Three other nereens for the two operating circulating water pumps had no appreciable accu =ulation. Similar happenings occurred:

July 27 nnd 28 when the number of shad minnovs impinged was estimated to be about 1,000 on each day.

The she.d minnovs appeared as a school and apparently attracted other fish to the vicinity.

Investigation and Corrective Action This is a season-related event and could be expected to occur scain during the shad minnov period.

It is not considered to constitute a significant environmental impact, and corrective measures to prevent recurrence are not considered necessary at this time.
