Dear Mr. Scidle:
This letter provides an Interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) l matter concerning General Electric (GE) AKR breakers being used in safety-related applications at Wolf Creek Generating Station. This item was initieilly reported by Mr. Gene Rathbun of Kansas Gas and Electric Company to Mr. Mike Murphy of the Nuclear Regulatory Com-mission, Region IV, on June 20, 1983.
During startup testing some safety-related GE AKR breakers were i
inspected at Wolf Creek and it was discovered that some of the l
l insulated couplings were cracked. The coupling is a 2" x 2" x 1" ceramic block which moves the breaker centacts into their closed position as the closing mechanism operates. The coupling travels through the breaker's are chute during the closing and opening cycle.
Several Wolf Creek AKR breakers exhibited the problem. The problem occurs when the coupling and are chute come into contact and pieces of the coupling break o.f.
This matter is still under evaluation. The status of this evaluation and the resolution of this concern will be reported to you on or before Octob,er 7, 1983. In the interim, please direct any questions on this subject to me or to Mr. Gene Rathbun of my staff.
