Directorate of Regulatory Operations U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Washington, DC 20545

Dear Mr. Knuth:

Our letter to F. E. Kruesi, dated July 9, 1973, submitted a final report on the failure of a Channel A Traveling Incore Probe (TIP) cable and detector at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant unit 1.

This report described as a permanent solution proximity-type limit switches that would be installed on unit 1 as soon as available from GE and on units 2 and 3 before fuel loading.

At the time our report was submitted, the proximity-type limit switch had not been developed.

Subsequently, it has taken longer to develop than originally anticipated. TVA intends to make the interim modification on unit 2 before fuel loading as was done on unit 1 and to install the switch as soon as it is available. We anticipate this will be not later than the first refueling outage for units 1 and 2 and will be before fuel loading for unit 3.

The interim modification is described in the above mentioned July 9 letter.

Very truly yours, f

J. E. Gilleland Assistant to the Manager of Power l
