o-o ABNORMAL OCCURRENCE REPORT NO. 73-20
SUBJECT:
Failure of Isolation Condensor NE01A Condansato Rcturn Valvo V-14-34 to operato during the last stages of a plant cooldown.
This event is considered to be an abnormal occurrence as defined in the Technical Specifications, paragraph 1.15D.
Notification of this event as required by the Technical Specifications, para-graph 6.6.2.a, was made to AEC Region I, Directorate of Regulatory Operations, by tc1cphonc on Sunday, September 9 1973, at 12:45 p.m.,
and pcrsonally to Mr. E. Grcenman, on. Monday, September 10, 1973.
SITUATION: During the last stages of a plant cooldown, an attempt was made to initiate the "A" Isolation condensor. The condensato return valvo V-14-34, however, failed to operate. Partinent data is as follows:

4.3 h.p. @ 1900 rpm,125 volts DC, 35 amps Prior to this failurc, the valvo had been operated successfully with no failurcs on provicus opcrability surveillance tests and also had boon used soveral times during the initial stages of the plant cooldown.

"" Report !!o 73-20 Saptember 8, 1973 REMEDIAT ACTION:
The overloads warc reset and the valve was operated electrically with no prior manual operation. It was fully stroked open and closed twice operating satisfactorily. A trace of curicnts drawn r
by tho wtor was takcn and compared with a trace taken the provious Thursday (Soptember 6e 1973). !!o difforances were detected.
SAFETY SIGNIFICANCE:
The significance of this event is the loss of redundancy of the Isolation condenser System, one of.which is, reqdired to act as a means for heat wmoval as detailed in Amendment 67 to the FDSAR.
