Inspection of Hydraulic Shock Absorbers (Snubbers)

Dear Mr. Goller:
In accordance with Mr. Skovholt's letter of October 1,1973, con-
)
cerning periodic inspection of hydraulic shock absorbers (snubbers), an l
inspection of all snubbers both inside and outside of containment was completed on January 12, 1976.
All snubbers were considered operable at this inspection. The accumulator of the Bergen-Paterson unit outside of containment, reported in our letter dated December 23, 1975, was replaced and found to have a scored cylinder. The strut of the Bergen-Paterson unit outside of contain-ment, reported in our letter dated November 24, 1975 as having developed wear at its attachment pin, w(to be within tolerances s replaced. Examination of the pin and bearing indicated the bearing.
During the inspection fluid was added to five of the eight Grinnell snubber units located on the pressuri::er relief piping. There was no evi-dence of leakage. The "A" Steam Generator reservoir for the Steam Generator restraints was found to be empty after the outage. The reservoir was refilled and surveillance has been increased on it. The reservoir acts as a makeup tank only since the hydraulic units are dual chambered with internal displacement tubing. Leakage is believed to be from the tubing connections to the units which are not readily accessible for maintenance.
