Dear Dr. Morris:

This is to report a condition relati'g,o the operation of the station in which during a surveillance test, t'e

'A" standby gas treatment system discharge da:r.per motor failed.

PROBLEM AND INITIAL ACTION At 3:00 FM on January 5, 1971, a sur ei. lance test of the Standby Gas Treatr.ent System was conducted.

I it al configuration was with "A" train in " Primary" and "B" train in ".taidby".

To start the test, the ventilation radiation monitors were

~B" train remained in " standby".

At this time it was noticed that "A" train had no discharge damper position 1

indication.

Investigation of the damper motor brsaker indicated that it was tripped and could not be reset.

INVESTIGATION Investigation of the cause of tt e breaker trip revealed that the

fendbellofthemotorwasloose.

The motcr'had apparently failed, tripping l the breakar.

The damper was found in the "open" position.

g CORRECTIVE ACTION The motor is being repaired, T: e discharge damper was :nnually closed and secured to prevent backflow.

Laily testing of B" SGT system train will be performed until "A" train is again operable.

The repaired motor was installed, checked out and returned to service on January 8, 1971. Daily testing of "B" SBGT system was then terminateds
