l Section 9.5.1 of the Catawba Safety Evaluation Report discusses Open Item 14 1

I Fire Protection Program.' The following infonnation is provided as clarification of previous submittals on fire protection.

My letter of April 14,1984 transmitted coninents on SER Section 9.5.1.

Under Section 9.5.1.5. Control of Combustibles, it was stated: "In each Reactor Building there ar.1 two 150 lb. hydrogen cylinders and associated piping which provides a gas blanket for Reactor Coolant Pump drain tanks."

Thesubjecttankshavebeenrelocatedtothehydrogenshedintheplant yard. An excess flow valve will be provided prior to fuel load so that in case of pipe break, hydrogen concentration in the affected area will not exceed 2%. This meets provisions of the Standard Review Plan.

The Reactor Butiding Annulus is considered "inside containment." The sprinkler system is arranged for automatic actuation to comply with requirements of Appendix R, Section !!!.G.2.e. This is consistent with the concept established in our October 21,1981 submittal concerning McGuire Nuclear Station and our July 5,1983 submittal concerning Catawba.
