j USE OF POTASSIUM IODIDE (KI) i AS A THYROID BLOCKING AGENT f
A. PURPOSE t
The purpose of this procedure is to outline the Station
' policy for distribution and use of potassium iodide .
j tablets by personnel during emergency radiation conditions.

PRECAUTIONS
Know they are a_llergic to iodine.
- 2. Taking more than the recommended doses of potassium lodide may cause undesiracle side effects. Possiole side effects include skin rashes, swell ing of the salivary glands, and " iodism" (Metallic taste, ourning mouth and throat, sore teeth and gums, symptoms of a head cold, and sometimes stcmach upset and diarrhea).
- 3. For continuing exposure conditions, one potassium iodide tablet.should be taken each day. KI,should not be taken for more than 10 days unless otherwi se specified by tne '.ompany Medicai Director.

PROCEDURE i 1. An adequate suppl y of potassium lodide tablets shall be maintained at the Tecnnical Support Center (TSC).
. operational Support Center (OSC), Emergency Operations Facility (EOF), and the Environs Emergency Kits.
1 I
, 2. Potassium lodido should be administered as follows:
- a. One (1) potassium lodide tablet ( 130n:g ) should be taken prior to receiving a projected calculatec dose equivalent to.the thyroid of 25 rem or e greater, og as soon as pcssible upon an individual being subjected for 1 hour1.157407e-5 days
2.777778e-4 hours
1.653439e-6 weeks
3.805e-7 months
.to an airborne concen.tration of I-131 of 1.25E-05 uCi/cc or j greater (Reference 4). The dose equivalent to the thyroid gland can be calculated by the use of the attached nomograms for 1-131,(Attachment
.4 j A), I-133 (Attachment 8), and I-135,(Attachment C).
- b. To use the nomogram the concentration of the i radionucl.ide in uCl/cc and the duration time of the exposure in hours is needed. The dose equivalent to the tnyroid is determined by connecting the radionuclide concentration in J uCi/cc with the- exposure time in hours. The point where the line intersects the thyroid
' dose equivalent l ine gi ves the dose . equi. val ent in rem.
- c. The committed dose equivalent to the tnyroid gland can be calculated as follows:
