December 29, 1983 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Serial No. 743 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation PSE/HWB:jdm:0017N Attn: Mr. Darrell G. Eisenhut, Director Docket No..
50-338 Division of Licensing License No.-
NPF-4 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
20555 Gentlemen:
VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY NORTH ANNA POWER STATION UNIT 1 STATUS OF NUREG-0737 ITEM II.D.I.2 In our letter dated December 21, 1982 (Serial No. 705), we provided a status report on the completed evaluation of the North Anna Unit 2 safety and relief valve discharge piping. Unit 2 had been designated as the lead unit for these evaluations.
The plant-specific piping calculations for the remaining Vepco units were to be accomplished using information and guidance from the North Anna Unit 2 evaluation.
The analysis has now been completed for North Anna Unit 1.
As with North Anna Unit 2, this analysis has demonstrated the feasibility of maintaining the safety valve loop seals provided the loop seals are maintained at an elevated temperature of approximately 400 F and modification? are made to the piping system supports.
The elevated temperature will be accomplished by modifying the pressurizer insulation adjacent to the loop seals and the addition of insulation to the loop seals.
It is our intention, therefore, to proceed with the final engineering and the required modifications on North Anna Unit 1 based on the retention of the safety valve loop seals.
Ver truly yours, W. L. Stewart cc: Mr. James P. O'Reilly Mr. James R.
