Docket No. STN 50-482 Subj: Potential 10CFR50.55(e) Report - I-Beams

Dear Mr. Gagliardo:

This letter provides an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) concerning I-beam fabrication discrepancies identified at Wolf Creek Generating Station.

This matter was initially reported by Messrs. Maynard and Creel of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) to Mr. Bill Johnson of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (Region IV) on December 1, 1983.

Three discrepancies have been identified concerning some individual heats of W6X20 and W6X25 I-beams procured for use at Wolf Creek Generating Station.

The discrepancies are as follows:

1.

W6X20 and W6X25 beams (Heat No. 77052 and 80551, respectively) apparently have webs that are either twisted or skewed (see attachment). Approximately 552' of the 640' received from Heat No. 77052 is located in a laydown or fabrication area. All 200' of the 200' received from Heat No. 80551 is located in a laydown area.

2.

A W6X25 beam (Heat No. 89728) has an overall cross sectional area that is 5.06% lower than the specified amount. The maximum code tolerance is 2.5% lower than the specified cross sectional area. Approximately 25' of the 360' received from Heat No. 89728 is located in stock.

3.

A W6X20 beam (Heat No. 76622) had indications of laminations within its web. Approximately 320' of the 1020' rectived from Heat No. 76622 is located in a laydown area.

These conditions have been documented on Nonconformance Reports (NCRs).

Re-solution of this matter will be completed subsequent to the evaluation and disposition of these NCRs.

Gagliardo December 30, 1983 The status of this potential 10CFR50.55(e) will be carried on the monthly status update as File-53564-Kll4 The final report or any significant new information will be submitted by separate correspondence. In the interim, please direct any questions concerning this subject to me or Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.
