1. SCOPE This document provides the description of Isolation Condenser (IC) tests that vWil be performed at SIET. The pre-test check lists and the test procedures are reported for all the tests. The criteria for steady-state conditions evaluation are also defined.

2. TEST MATRIX Seven types of test are planned. They are splited into two groups:

. PERFORMANCE TESTS: type 1,2,3,4 tests

. STRUCTURAL TESTS: type S. 6. 7 tests l l

Table 2.1 reports the PANTHERS-IC test matrix, f The follovdng paragraphs give a description of the different types of test and contain the tables shovdng the experimental conditions for each test.

4 2.1 Type 1 Test : Steady-State Thermal-hydraulic Performance I

These tests vdll establish the IC heat rejection rate as a function of the inlet pressure, in general,

the procedure for the steady-state tests vdll be as follows.

4 The steam vessel and IC heat exchanger will be initial a:r purged; the initial IC pressure vdll be either design pressure, or a lower value, depending on whether or not the test is also beinD used as a structural demonstration cycle. The IC is then placed in operation by opening the IC drain valve. Steam supply to the steam vessel vWil be regulated in a manner such that the vessel pressure stabilizes at the desired value. Flovv into the IC vdll be natural circulation driven, as is the case for the SBWR. Data vdll then be acquired for a period of approximately 30 miriutes. At this l point. the steam supply may be increased or decreased to gather data at a different operating I pressure, or the test may be terminated. l Table 2.2 shows the Type i test conditions.

The pre-test checklist and test procedure are reported in Appendix A.1.

1 2.2 Type 2 Test : Startup Demonstration l These tests vdll be performed in the same way as the steady-state performance tests; data vdll be recorded during the translent . The test objective is to monitor the IC startup and operation in a 4

situation comparable to a reactor trip.

Table 2.3 shows the Type 2 test conditions.

l 2.3 Type 3 Test : Noncondensable Gas Effect l Non condensable gas effect tests vdll begin in a similar manner as the steady-state performance

! tests. When the pressure is stabilized at the desired value, a mixture of nitrogen and helium vdll be injected into the IC supply line at a very low flow rate. The ratio of nitrogen to helium in the i injected flow vdll be 3.5/1, simulating the composition of radiolytic gases. Gas injection vdll I continue until the IC inlet pressure increases to 7.75 MPa. The lower IC vent will then be opened, and the IC wHI be vented until pressure retums to the initial operating pressure, or stabilizes at an l intermediate value, if the former case the test is terminated. If the later case the IC top vent vdll be

( opened, and the performance vdll be monitored until venting is complete, and the inlet pressure l . retums to the initial value. I Table 2.4 shows the Type 3 test conditions.

2.4 Type 4 Test : Pool Water I.evel Effect 1

Waterlevel vdt! be stopped when it reaches mid length of the condenser tubes. or when the IC inlet pressure reaches 8.72 MPa whichever comes first. The pool veter level will then be increased to normal value and the IC performance aflowed to retum to normal value, Table 2.5 shows the type 4 test conditions.

2.5 Type 5 Test: Normal IC Operation Structural Cycle This test type is essentially representative of the cyclic duty expected of the IC as used in

( operation in the SBWR. The test vdll be conducted in a very similar manner as the steady state performance test (Type 1 test) but the operating pressure vdll be equal to the design pressure. 8.72 MPa, and the initial pool water temperature vdll be less than 32*C.

Thermal +ydraulic tests can be qualified as structural cycles (Type 5 Test) if the above limits are respected and the inlet pressure is held for 2 hours2.314815e-5 days <br />5.555556e-4 hours <br />3.306878e-6 weeks <br />7.61e-7 months <br />.

Table 2.6 shows the Type 5 test conditions.

This test type is essentially representative of the cyclic duty expected of the IC as used in stand-by mode in the SBWR. The test consists in a pressurization of the IC up to 8.72 MPa and in a cooldom and de-pressurization. The initial pool water temperature is less than 32*C, Thermal-hydraulic tests can be qualified as structural cycles (Type 6 test) if these limits are respected.

Table 2.7 shows the Type 6 test conditions.

The pre test check list and test procedure are reported in Appendix A.6.

2.7 Type 7 Test : ATWS Event Structural Cycle This test type consists in a steady state at 8.72 MPa followed by a pressure peak up to 9.58 MPs, before condensate drain valve opening.

After IC operation startup, the test continuation is a 2 h steady-state at 8.72 MPa. During this test both thermal-hydraulic and structural data Wil be recorded.

Table 2.5 shows the Type 7 test conditions.

The pre-test checklist and test procedure are reported in Appendix A.7.

2.8 Shakedown Test I

The plant Wil be characterized by a pre-operational hot test; it Wil be performed folloWng the pre-test '

check list and test procedure described in Appendix A.8.

The purposes of the shakedom test are: i

l a) measure the reflux condensation rate of IC steam supply line due to heat losses outside pool and condesation inside pool, Measurements Wil be performed at two different pressure level,

  • 4.0 MPa and 8.72 MPa, Wthout IC operation; b) determine the hydraulic resistance of steam supply line steam riser. IC heat exchanger and drain line at the maximum available Stsam flowrate:

d) measure the " drain time for the IC upper plenum during the IC startup transient.

3. STEADY-STATE REQUIREMENTS The steady-state conditions are defined as follow, ICinlet pressure (P A003) difference between nominal and average value less than +/-3 %
