Keppler Regional Administrator, Region III Of fice of Inspection and Enforcement U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137 RE: Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket Nos. 50-440; 50-441 Potential Significant Deficiency on General Electric Supplied HFA Relays [RDC 62(82)]

Dear Mr. Keppler:

As stated in our interim report to you dated September 17, 1982, an inspection is to be conducted to evaluate a possible deficiency in HFA relays supplied to Perry Nuclear Power Plant by the General Electric Company. Our letter to you dated November 5,1982, identified that this inspection would be completed by October 31, 1983, for Units 1 and 2.

Due to delays in the turnover of one system containing HFA relays, Nuclear Test Section will finish the inspection of the Unit I relays during the first quarter of 1984.

For the systems inspected to date, no relays containing incorrect wipe settings were identified. The final report on the Unit I relays will be submitted by April 27, 1984.

The inspection for the Unit 2 relays has been postponed until 1985 due to the current low priority placed on Unit 2 work. Our next report concerning the Unit 2 relays will be submitted by December 20, 1985.

Please call if there are any additional questions.

Sincerely, Murray R. Edelman Vice President Muclear Group MRE:pab cc:
