Subject:

SER Confirmatory Issue #6 (NUREG-0853)

Containment Ultimate Strength

Dear Mr. Schwencer:

This is a letter of confirmation concerning a telephone conference call between representatives of Illinois Power Company and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on September 28, 1983. The purpose of this call was to clarify the analysis requirements to resolve SER Confirmatory Issue #6, " Containment Ultimate Strength Analysis".

During this conference call, Illinois Power Company committed to perform a local detonation analysis using the methodology established by Mississippi Power and Light on the Grand Gulf containment. More specifically, the pressure loading developed by Sandia National Laboratories for Grand Gulf, assuming a local detonation in the volume bounded by the drywell wall, containment wall, the hydraulic control unit floor and the suppression pool would be applied to the Clinton containment.

We anticipate completing this analysis in November, and trust this work will resolve your concerns with respect to Confirmatory Issue #6.

Sincerely yours,

!d Roge M. Nelson 8311080402 831103 Director - Nuclear 05000461 Licensing & Configuration
