Dear Sir:

The NRC was notified of a potentially reportable deficiency in the ref erenced telephone conversation.

At that time, it was estimated that a determination of reportability would be made within thirty (30) days.

Due to the extensive investigation and evaluation required, an Interim Report is attached. It is now expected that this information will be fit.alized by February 3,1984, at which time a complete report will be submitted.

es INTERIM REPORT - DER 83-64 POTENTIAL REPORTABLE DEFICIENCY ARIZONA PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY (APS)

PVNCS UNIT 2 & 3 1.

Potential Problem During prerequisite testing a total of twenty-nine (29) of thirty (30) Safety Relief Valvea failed to meet the requirements of APS station test 73ST-92Z01. The reported condition was that the subject valves failed to reseat after set point was achieved and consequently provided excessive seat leakage. The tag numbers of the faulty valves will be included in the final report.

The Safety Relief Valves were supplied by Target Rock Corporation under purchase order 13-JM-691.

II.

Approach To and Status of Proposed Resolution Bechtel engineering has requested the services of a Target Rock field representative to inspect the subject valves.

III.

Projected Completion of Corrective Action and Submittal of the Final Report Evaluation of this condition and submittal of the Final Report is forecast to be completed by Febrcary 3,1984.
