DUKE POWER GOMPANY P.O. BOX 33180 CHARLOTTE, N.C. 28242 HALB. TUCKER TELEPHONE (704) 373-4531 ca February 22, 1984 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission Washington, D. C. 20555 Attention: Ms. E. G. Adensam, Chief Licensing Branch No. 4 Re: Catawba Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 50-413 and 50-414
Dear Mr. Denton:
Ms. Elinor G. Adensam's letter of December 30, 1983 transmitted seventeen (17) questions regarding the Transamerica Delavel, Inc. (TDI) diesel generators installed at Catawba. A response to each of these questions is attached.
These responses provide a detailed history of the procurement, quality assurance and operational experience with the Catawba lA and 18 diesel generators.
In order to provide the Staff with reasonable assurance that the TDI diesel generators at Catawba will provide reliable emergency power, two related programs are now underway.
Duke is actively participating in the TDI Diesel Generators Owners Group program which was presented to the Staff in a January 26, 1984 meeting.
In addition to the Owners Group program, Duke has initiated a plant specific effort which includes a test and inspection program. This program is more fully described in the attached program description, Extended Operation Test of Diesel Generator lA.
Recognizing the importance of resolution of the diesel generator issue, we would like to meet with the Staff at their earliest convenience to discuss the resolution of this concern.
Very truly yours,
