^:el in Unit El in 2ece=ber,1984.

Last week, a spokesman for the Nuclear Re6ulatory Co-~4 ssion (URC) described the rece=ber timetable as opti=istic.

As to the cast i= pact, the co=pany said there is sufficient cost contingency providad in the overall project budget to cover the delay.

02I owns 31.1% of the project and vill receive a corresponding percentage of the alectricity generated. Chic Zdison, and its subsidiary Fermsylvania Power, 0 m 35.29, Duquesne Light,13 7% and Toledo Edison,19 96.

The five co=panies serve so=e 2.5 million customers in an industrial crescent in northern and central Ohio and vestern Pennsylvania.

"Our regular =onitoring of construction progress indicates that Ferry Unit #1 is 93 percent complete and we had hoped to complete the unit in mid-1985 2ut so=e facets of the overt.11 project are behind schedule," said Murray C. Idel=sn, 7 ice President-Muclear. "Honetheless, based on our most current infermation, we believe that Unit #1 vill be cc=pleted in late 1985," he said.

Eeaffir=ing the Cc=pany's cc--itment to quality, Edelman said, "'Je are detemined to take the time necessary to make sure Ferry is a safe and efficient plant. We are taking the time needed to do the job right the first time."

Edelman pointed out that Perry has received consistently high marks from all outside agencies. In December, the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board said the company's quality assurance program, "has prevented and will cantinue to prevent unsafe conditions at the plant."

A project the size of Perry, employing about 6500 workers representing many skills and trades is enomous in magnitude and complexity. The delay is attributed to a longer than planned time to install piping and electronic control circuitry, all of which must undergo rigorous and extensive testing before the plant can be declared ready for commercial operation.

Today's anncuncement was aimed at addressing repurts in the media and the financial comunity reEarling progress on the project.
