Dear Mr. Denton:
Section 7.3.2.1 of the Catawba Safety Evaluation Report discusses Confirmatory Issue 25, Steam Generator Level Control and Protection. Duke Power has received and reviewed vendor drawings, purchased equipment, and completed the supporting detailed design and installation for a Steam Generator Overfill Protection System. This system changes the Catawba feedwater isolation initiation logic from a two-out-of-three to a two-out-of-four high-high steam generator level. The hardware was purchased from the same vendor as the original logic system, so that all test and diagnostic functions will be maintained as in the original system.
This modified SG Overfill Protection System eliminates the issue of a single channel failure causing the high-high level trip to be reduced to a two-out-of-two system. The system will now be in total compliance with IEEE 279, Paragraph 4.7, " Control and Protection System Interaction."
