Cp&L Carolina Power & Light Company MAR 62 1983 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention: Mr. D. B. Vassallo, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 2 Division of Licensing United States Nuclear Regulatory Commist tar Washington, DC 20555 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNIT NOS.1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-325 AND 50-324 LICENSE NOS. DPR-71 AND DPR-62 NUREG-0737 ITEM III.D.3.4 CONTROL ROOM HABITABILITY

Dear Mr. Vassallo:

In accordance with your August 27, 1982 letter requesting Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) to provide additional information concerning NUREG-0737 Item III.D.3.4, Contcol Room Habitability, CP&L has reviewed ite recember 30, 1980 response. As a result, CP&L's response repcrt NUS-3697

" Control Room Habitability Evaluation, Brunswick Steam Electric Plant" has been reviewed and revised. Revision 1 of this report (dated January 1983) is attached and provides a more detailed review and evaluation of the NUREG-0737 requirements. The revised report indicates those areas where CP&L complies with the requirements of NUREG-0737 Item III.D.3.4 and provides a justification for the areas where the requirements are not totally fulfilled.

The areas of concern that were indicated in our December 30, 1980 response have been totally resolved. As a result of our previous examination, CP&L discovered that the logic for the chlorine isolation function did not perform as required. This deficiency was reported to the NRC by Licensee Event Report No. 2-28-84 and resolved by Plant Modification 81-032.

Carolina Power & Light Company will incorporate into its existing periodic test the acceptance criteria required to verify the 1/8-inch water gauge positive pressure in the control room every 18 months. This procedure will be revised prior to its next scheduled performance. Control room positive pressure is currently verified on a periodic basis; however, the pressure differential has not been quantified.

D. B. Vassallo The findings of this review have lead CP&L to conclude that the control room will be habitable as required. - The information in the report is presently undergoing a quality check; however, we do not expect the results and conclusions to change as a consequence of that verification. Any significant changes will be promptly brought to your attention.
