I. INTRODUCTION NUS is developing information necessary for a section 316(a)

Type 2 Demonstration for the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant. This demonstration will sock information on the impact of plant operation under alternative thermal limits on selected representative important species (RIS) in the i

. Mississipni river ecosystem near the plant. The proposed alternative thermal limits will affect summer river thermal regimes; consequently the data proposed to be supplied pertain to life stages and biological activities during the warm seasons. The impact of operating this facility during the other three seasons ir. identical to that described in the 316(a) Type I Damonstration on the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant already submittec.

A Phase I report, which proposed a list of RIS, was submitted to Northern States Power Company in June, 1976 and presently awaits assessment by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). Six fish species and five benthic macroinvertebrates (insects) were selected as RIS. In the present report, available literature and unpublished data on thermal tolerances are reviewed and proposed for approval by MPCA to be subsequently used as part of a Type 2 Demonstration.

ll.

e The approach proposed by the MPCA is to determine areas which would be excluded from various biological activities as a result of plant operation. biological activities outlined in the MPCA matrix (HPCA 1975) appear to be more appropriate for fish than for insects as most insects occupy the terrestrial environment during the adult stage. Application of the matrix to insects is further complicated by their limited mobility, tendency to drift, and the limited amount of available information on thermal relationships.
