Dear Sir:

The NRC was notified of a Potentially Reportable Deficiency in the referenced telephone conversation. At that time, it was estimated that a determination of reportability would be made within thirty (30) days.

Due to the extensive investigation and evaluation required, an Interim Report is attached.

It is now expected that this information will be finalized by April 19, 1983, at which time a complete report will be submitted.

_o INTERIM REPORT - DER 82-84 POTENTIAL REPORTABLE DEFICIENCY ARIZONA PUBLIC SERVICE COMPANY (APS)

PVNGS UNIT #1 I.

Potential Problem Purchase Order Specification 13-EM-017 requires that space heaters shall be located to prevent excessive heating of electrical wiring. Due to excessive heat from the space heaters, localized damage has occurred in 480 Volt Load Centers supplied by ITE-Could as follows:

1E-PGA-L31D Charred paint on back wall and damaged relay in cubicle L31D1.

1E-PGA-L33C Discolored surrounding paint from strip heater which is located just under a control wiring run.

1E-PGA-L31 Visual inspection indicated IE-PGA-L33 a concern that heat from the IE-PGA-L35 space heaters could impact nearby relays and/or control wiring.

II.

Approach To and Status Of Proposed Resolution Bechtel Engineering is corresponding with ITE-Gould to disposition this condition.

III. Projected Completion of Corrective Action and Submittal of Final Report Evaluation of this condition and submittal of the Final Report is forecast to be completed by April 19, 1983.
