The Grand Gulf Nuclear Statlan (GGNS) Unit 1 Operating License requires that Entergy Operaticus, Inc. submit quarterly reports on the status of the "Degrtjnd Core Accident flydrogen Control Program."

This quarterly stat us report is submit ted to comply with the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (CGNS) Unit 1 Operating hicense.
This requirement sjecifies that Entergy Operations, Inc. should provide quarterly reports outlining the status of the ongoing research program to address degraded core hydrogen control requirements.
1 This report covers the third calendar quarter of 1991, ending September 30, 1991.
This report includes brief summaries of submittals made by Entergy Operations this quarter, along with summaries of meetings between the NRC Sta f f and Entergy Operations.
Entergy Operations is participating in the Ilydrogen Control Owners Group (11 COG) which is 4
conducting generic research and analyses to resolve the degraded core hydrogen control issue.
Since the work completed by 11000 parallels Entergy Operations' program to resolve t his issue, this l
report also includes summaries of meetings between the 11C0G and the NRC.
The meetings summarf ed in this report do not reflect a formal llCOG position with respect to any issue, but represent Entergy Operations'. interpretation of those meetings.
2.0 Summary of EntergyJ perations, Inc. Submittals Entergy Operat. ions made no submittals to the NRC on the Degraded Core Accident flydrogen Control Program during this calendar quarter of 1991, 3.0 Summary _oLitCOG_and NRC_ Meet ings No formal meetings were held between Entergy Operations or llCOG and the NRC during this quarter.
4.0 Ilyd rogen_ Con t ro1 Program, S t a tus The summaries and status of the flydrogen Cont.rol Program as stated herein do'not reflect the llCOG position with respect to any program, but' represent Entergy Operationr.' interpretation of these programs.
The generic research and generic analyses conducted by IICOG to resolve the degraded core hydrogen control. Issue are compinto, in accordance with this, the NRC issued a Safety Evaluation Report (SER) on the' generic flydrogen Control Program on August 10, 1990.
The SER documnnted the NRC's review of the-generic ilydrogen Control Program and deiineated which issues were considered closed by the -
NRC and which required addit (onal action by the llCOG and/or the Individual utilities, i

-On August 30, _1991, during a telephone conversation between
-11000 and NRC St.af f,11C00 requested a forma 1 response to the April 1991 submittals (Reft ilGN-137 and llGN*138) regarding criteria for pressure-survivability evaluations, acceptable -
-accident sequences to hydrogen generation events (ilGEs), and the availability of containment sprays or unit coolers during an llGC.

i Following acceptable _ resolution of the above issues with the NRC, Entergy Operations will review its schedule for submittal of the GGNS Final llydrogen Control Report, identify the remaining work necessary for this submittal, and initiate work on the remaining plant-specific tasks.
