20555 Gentlemen:

VIRGINIA ELECTIRC AND POWER COMPANY NORTH ANNA POWER STATION RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 83-41 The following is a response to Generic Letter 83-41 which requested voluntary information regarding premature diesel engine degradation caused by starts with rapid acceleration and loading without prelubrication and warmup.

1 and 2 diesel generators have undergone design changes to alleviate problems associated with fast cold starts.

Therefore, for the i

The North Anna Unit 1, 1982 to Dec. 1, 1983) the Unit 1 ciesel generators The period in question (Dec.did not experience any fast cold starts as defined in the Generic 2 diesels, 2H and 2J, have had two fast cold start each.

Both starts signals.

Unit were a result of actual Safety Injection start A review of the maintenance records on the Unit 2 diesels showed n of the fast cold starts.

However, we think detrimental ef fects as a result i

whether the number of starts required by the Unit 2 Technical Specificat ons,the reliability factor increase are excessive and do not hot or cold starts, of the diesels.

1, 1983 the Unit 2 diesels have each been started an average of five times per month.

This frequency of testing results in more From Dec. 1, 1982 to Dec.

preventative maintenance, repair, and downtime.

Also, trequent testing reduces the amount of time before the diesel reaches its designed 2000 hour0.0231 days
0.556 hours
0.00331 weeks
7.61e-4 months
rating at 3 MW and would require a maintenance overhaul.
