Dear Mr. Keppler:
INTERIM 10CFR50.55 (e)/21 REPORT NO. U-66 CALLAWAY PLANT UNIT 1 On November 23, 1983, Union Electric reported a 10CFR50.55 (e)/21 deficiency to Paul Pelke, NRC Region III.
The deficiency involves the failure of contactor coils in ITE Gould Motor Control Center two-speed starters for Containment Cooling Fan Motors.
The failure involves the slow speed 42S coils, four of which have failed (shorted) after operating for a period between thirty minutes and one hour of service.
Special efforts were made to assure these coil failures were not caused by the mechanical interlock failure reported in Report No. U-65.
Union Electric has requested Bechtel to provide infor-mation on the failure and to determine if a generic problem exists with the contactor coil.
ITE Gould will be contacted to provide information pertinent to the failure.
A final report on this issue is expected to be submitted within 90 days of the date of this letter.
Very truly yours, l/
b?
Donald F.
