McGuire Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370 Fast Cold Starts of Diesel Generators (NRC Generic Letter 83-41)
Dear Mr. Denton:
Mr. D. G. Eisenhut's letter of December 16,1983 (Generic Letter 83-41) concerning possible deleterious effects of fast cold starts on diesel generators requested responses to two questions involving experience with, and assessment of, fast cold starts. The folloring information is provided with regard to McGuire nuclear station.
The diesel generators at McGuire are not subjected to fast cold starts because of design features of the Diesel Generator Engine Cooling Water System which circu-late warm water through the D/G whenever the D/G is not running, and the Diesel Generator Engine Lubrication Oil System which keep the oil warm and lubricate the main bearings and rocker arms during non-operating conditions. -There have
-been no fast cold starts in the past yea'r, and because of redundancy of systems none are expected in.the future. Since McGuire does not have experience in fast cold starts of diesel generators we cannot provide an accurate assessment of the effects of this mode of starting.
