Dear Sir:

Subject:

Fast Cold Starts of Diesel Generators 4

The following information is provided in response to questions contained in Reference b). Please note that our Emergency Diesels are designed to have a coatinuously running lube oil and jacket coolant warmup system. Additionally, our normal surveillance procedures require the diesels to be cranked to pre-lubricate all cylinders prior to starting. During demand starts this total pre-lubrication does not occur.

According to our records, the number of demand starts of our Emergency Diesel Generators between December 1, 1982 and December 1, 1983 was threa per machine.

The categrical breakdown of those starts is as follows:

a surveillance testing 0

b maintenance activitics O

c) actual demands 3 per machine In our judgement nnn-prelubricated starting can lead to accelerated long-term wear of some bearing surfaces of the machine and the number of such starts is kept to a minimum.

It is our belief that current operations will not signi-ficantly reduce the reliability of the machine over the life of the plant.

~We trust that this informatfon is sufficient; however, should additional data be needed, do not hesitate to ca)6.

Very truly y6urs, VERMONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER CORPORATION 8401170352 840113
