Dear Sir:
Cooper-Bessemer Reciprocating Products Division, a division of Cooper Industries, recently reported (Our Ref. OCG-9979) a potential problem with the Woodward EGA Control Box which controls speed / frequency on the Emergency Diesel Generator System.
Since then additional information has been obtained from both Texas Utilities Company-Comanche Peak Steam Electric Station (CPSES) and Woodward Governor Company which has resulted in a change in Cooper's evaluation of this previously reported failure.
Recent discussions indicate that CPSES did not experience a failure of the Woodward EGA Control Unit as previously reported. The leaking electrolytic capacitor has now t
been determined to be a leaking mylar capacitor, with the " leak" to be an internal voltage / current leakage which prevented this mylar capacitor from maintaining a steady state of voltage.
Cooper has revised the qualified life of the EGA Control Unit as reported earlier.
Additionally, Service Information Memo No. 389 has been issued describing the storage requirements of both electrolytic capacitors and mylar capacitors.
