Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370 Generic Letter 93-04, "Roo Control System Failure and Withdrawal of Rod Cluster Control Assemblies NRC Request for Additional Information (RAI) dated December 5,1994 Gentlemen:
Reference Mr. Victor Nerses' request for additional information on McGuire's response to Generic Letter 93-04, the Operations procedure for initial rod movement testing prior to startup has been changed to require Instrumentation and Electrical maintenance personnel to take current order timing and control rod drive movement (CRDM) current traces in accordance with Westinghouse Owner's Group (WOG) WOG-94-048 Test A and C. This testing was performed on Unit 1 and Unit 2 prior to startup after the 1EOC9 and 2EOC9 refueling outages and will be performed prior to startup after each refueling outage. Since the actual CRDM timing is not the same for all Westinghouse units, McGuire System Engineering has requested Westinghouse to evaluate the McGuire and Catawba CRDM pSrformance results prior to implementing a CRDM timing modification. A timing modification will be initiated for McGuire Unit 1 and 2 upon receipt and evaluation of the Westinghouse results, in addition, Westinghouse stated the cause of the failure at Salem Nuclear Station was due to an inductance voltage spike from a mechanical step counter. The mechanical counters at McGuire were replaced during the 1EOC9 and 2EOC9 refueling outages with digital counters which can not produce an inductance voltage spike.
Should there be any questions concoming this information, contact Randy Cross at (704) 875-4179.
Very Truly Yours, j
