NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No.

50-301 Unit Name Point Beach Unit 2 Date August 9, 1983 Completed By C. W.

Fay Telephone 414/277-2811 Unit 2 completed its ninth refueling outage with the reactor going critical at 2214 hours0.0256 days
0.615 hours
0.00366 weeks
8.42427e-4 months
on July 1.

The Unit 2 turbine went on line at 0438 hours0.00507 days
0.122 hours
7.242063e-4 weeks
1.66659e-4 months
on July 6.

At 1706 hours0.0197 days
0.474 hours
0.00282 weeks
6.49133e-4 months
on July 6 I

Unit 2 turbine was taken off line to conduct overspeed trip tests.

At 1837 hours0.0213 days
0.51 hours
0.00304 weeks
6.989785e-4 months
on July 6 the generator went back on line.

Load was ramped up at a rate of 3% per hour as a prerequisite to fuel conditioning.

Load was held steady at 439 MWe from July 7 to July 11 for fuel conditioning and at 0445 hours0.00515 days
0.124 hours
7.357804e-4 weeks
1.693225e-4 months
on July 11 achieved full power, approximately 493 MWe net.

On July 13 the Unit 2 south nonreturn valve was found to be in a degraded condition.

This was due to movement of the valve operator sleeve on the disc shaft causing interference with the building structure.

The valve arm has been subsequently modified to place it in a fully operational condition.

A 30-day Licensee Event Report will be submitted.

On July 21 at approximately 1630 hours0.0189 days
0.453 hours
0.0027 weeks
6.20215e-4 months
a red phone call regarding an unplanned release of radioactive noble gas from the plant's cryogenic system was made.

Subsequent investigation found the following items to be the contributing factors:

1.

The waste gas compressor regulating valve (PCV-1) had a packing leak.

2.

The waste gas "C"

tank relief valve was leaking.

3.

The waste gas compressor discharge relief valve was leaking.

3.21 Curies of noble gas radioactivity were released to the atmosphere which is less than the limits allowed in the Technical Specifications.

The causes of the release have been repaired and the gas stripper system is back in normal operation.

Other safety-related maintenance this period included repairs to "B"

residual heat removal pump and repairing body-to-bonnet leaks on newly installed manual letdown isolation valve 2CV-371B and valve 2-371A.
