Dear Mr. Denton:
My letter of May 18, 1983 described Duke Power Company's plans for modification of the Catawba Unit 1 steam generators. The purpose of this letter is to update two items discussed in that letter.
At the time of our previous submittal, it was expected that work would begin on the steam generators in September 1983. Because the work has proceeded smoothly on other units with Westinghouse Madel D2/D3 steam generators, we now expect to begin preliminary work on the Catawba Unit 1 steam generators the week of August 8, 1983.
As discussed in section 4.1 of the May 18, 1923 submittal, we had proposed to inspect the first five rows of the preheater after completion of the modification on each steam generator. The purpose of this inspection was to identify any damage to the tubes resulting from the modification. As a result of experience in modifying other Model D2/D3 steam generators, Westinghouse has recommended that we inspect only the first row of tubes in each steam generator for damage.
If any damage is noted, additional rows would be inspected. This more limited inspection is considered adequate since any modification related damage to the tubes would be evident in the first row and a 100% eddy current baseline inspection using multi-frequency techniques was previously performed on these steam generators.
