Dear Sir:

In Reference (c), we filed an Interim 10CFR50.55(e) Report regarding a deficiency in the structural design of the reinforced concrete walls separating pump cells in the Category I Service Water and Circulating Water Pump House. The following information is being filed pursuant to the interim reporting provision of 10CFR50.55(e)(3).

Description of Deficiency A deficiency has been determined to exist in the structural design of the concrete walls separating pump cells in the Seismic Category I Service Water and Circulating Water Pump House. The deficiency exists because these concrete walls were not designed to withstand forces created by differences in water levels in adjacent cells when one of these cells is dewatered for maintenance (access to the travelling screens and/or pumps).

Starostecki Page 2 Analysis of Safety Implication The forces associated with diff erences in water levels of adjacent cells when one cell is dewatered for maintenance would cause overstress in the lower portions of the concrete cell wall. The overstress caused by differential water levels could cause the lower sections of the concrete walls to experience extensive cracking and the possibility of some spalling of the wall.

Corrective Action Taken The analysis and design of the required structural modifications for the Circulating Water portion of the Pump House have been completed. The analysis and design of the required structural modifications for the Service Water portion of the Pump House is being perfortaed and scheduled to be completed by Septembe r 16, 1983. A report which will summarize details of structural modifications to the Service Water and Circulating Water Pump House will be submitted by October 15, 1983.
