ULNRC-3085 TAC NO. 67223 CALLAWAY PLANT DOCKET NUMBER 50-483 RESOLUTION OF GENERIC SAFETY ISSUE 93,

" STEAM _ BINDING OF AUXILIARY PEEDWATER PUMPS" Ref erences : 1) NRC Bulletin No. 85-01 dated October 29, 1985

2) NRC Generic Letter 88-03 dated February 17, 1988
3) NRC letter from T.

W.

Alexion to D.

F.

Schnell dated July 8, 1988

4) NRC Inepection Report No. 05-483/90013 (DRP) dated August 28, 1990 Generic Letter 88-03 was issued to alert licensees of the potential for steam binding in the auxiliary feedwater system.

Union Electric responded to this issue by letter dated May 12, 1988 (ULNRC-1774).

This letter stated that a combination of training, administrative controls, and design features would be utilized to minimize the possibility of steam binding the auxiliary feedwater

(. FW) pumps.

In addition, Union A

Electric elected to vent the AFW pumps each shift'to ensure that no system back-leakage had occurred.

This commitment exceeded the recommendations of Bulletin 85-01 and Generic Letter 88-03.

Venting the pumps each shift has resulted in rust stains and general housekeeping concerns in the area of the pumps.

A review of the AFW system piping i

arrangement shows that touching the pipe in the area of the pump discharge check valve (as recommended by Bulletin 85-01 and as required by Callaway procedures) provides adequate indication of the fluid conditions.

Therefore, Union Electric will no longer vent the AFW pumps each shift.
