DON ALD F. SCHN.LL P. O. BOX 549 voce passeDENT ST. Louis, MISSOURI S3 8 66 Mr. James G. Keppler, Director p792 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission OO Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, IL 60137

Dear Mr. Keppler:

ULNRC- 654 FINAL 10 CFR 50.55(e)/PART 21 REPORT NO. U-58 BYRON JACKSON ESSENTIAL SERVICE WATER PUMP "B" CALLAWAY PLANT UNIT 1 Union Electric Company advised the NRC on July 18, 1983 of a deficiency reportable under the criteria of 10 CPR Part

50. 55 (e) regarding Byron Jackson Essential Service Water Pump "B". The deficiency involves the apparent manufacture of the pump (PEF 01B) without the second stage impeller being keyed to the shaft.

The defect first evidenced itself during pump operation which was supporting flushing activities. The pump had performed normally for approximately 10 months of intermittent operation when on June 27, 1983, after approximately two hours of operation, the discharge pressure dropped off significantly with no change in system conditions.

After considering possible explanations for the falloff in pressure, disassembly of the pump was performed on July 17 (per the vendors recommendation and direction) revealing shaft and second stage impeller damage and no evidence of the second stage impeller key. Union Electric has since made arrangements with Byron Jackson to have the damaged pump repaired and the second stage impeller key installed. The pump is currently scheduled to be returned to Callaway the week of August 15 and will be installed immediately upon return.

To insure that Byron Jackson Essential Service Water Pump "A" (PEF 01A) was supplied per design, disassembly of the pump was performed under the direction of a Byron Jackson service representative. The disassembly and inspection process verified the impeller keys were present per design. No other Byron' Jackson pumps are employed in safety-related applications and therefore the inspection of pump "A" and the repair and reassembly of pump "B" encompasses the corrective action.

This deficiency is considered significant in that a failure of this pump could result in compromising the ability of }q' I'

the essential service water system to perform its safety function. This letter serves as our final report on this subject.

Very truly yours, m
