Dear Mr. Denton:
On February 22, 1983 the NRC issued the Safety Evaluation Report (SER) for the Catawba Nuclear Station. The design of the diesel generator intake and exhaust system is noted as an open item in Sect'.on 1.7.
As discussed further in Section 9.5.8:
- 1) The applicant has not submitted sufficient information on the blockage of the intake and exhaust openings as a result of ice and freezing rain.
- 2) The applicant has not submitted any drawings on the redesigned intake and exhaust structures.
In response to these items the following.information is provided.
- 1) The intake and exhaust structure louvers are recessed in the structural openings and protective overhangs are provided in accordance with ASHRAE recommendations for " Inlet and Outlet Design for Weather and Dust Protection". Louver spacing is greater than 4 inches between blades, thus providing adequate space for ice buildup on the blades without encouraging blockage. As previously stated, velocity and corresponding pressure drop are low enough to prevent blade icing from compromising the intake and exhaust system's performance.
- 2) Attached are revised general arrangement drawings which show the redesigned diesel generator intake and exhaust structures. These figures will be included in Revision 8 to the FSAR.
