DUKE POWER September 29,1994 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission e.TTN: Documcat Cor. trol Desk Washington, D.C. 20555
Subject:
Catawba Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-413 and 50-414 Generic Ixtter 89-13, " Service Water System Problems Affecting Safety Related Equipment" By letters dated January 26, 1990, September 12, 1990 and October 20, 1993, Duke Power provided updates to the status and schedule for implementation of outstanding activities associated with the subject Generic Letter.
These letters, collectively, constitutes consideration of all actions identified and required by Generic Letter 89-13. Preventative / corrective measures were initiated to meet compliance with the requirements of Generic Letter 89-13, however, during a recent Service Water Inspection performed here at Catawba by Region II, areas of concern were identified, with respect to full compliance to Generic Letter 89-13, for which additional preventative / corrective measures are planned:
i The Service Water System Assured Make-up lines to the Component Cooling System Surge Tanks were identined as stagnant service water lines, not all of which were flushed or Gow tested on a periodic basis.
These lines were subsequently flushed or radiographed to verify adequate flow. Procedures to Dush these lines periodically, initially on a quarterly frequency, are currently being developed for implementation by December 1,1994.
The Service Water System Assured Supply to the Auxiliary Shutdown Panel Supply Units were identi6ed as stagnant service water lines that are not currently Dushed at design flow. Measures to periodically flush these normally stagnant lines at design How rates will be implemented by January 1,1995.
