Docket No. 50-537 APR 011983 HQ:S:83:238 Dr. J. Nelson Grace, Director CRBR Program Office Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission

Dear Dr. Grace:

INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROLS

"In summary, the three scenarios explained above conservatively illustrate how the top level requirements provided in CRBRP Principal Design Criterion 35 for the Re:idual Heat Removal Systems are satisfied even though a failure in one division of lE power (e.g. , cable fire affecting DHRS and SGAHRS cables in the same cable tray) can affect both SGAHRS and DHRS."

The project position is that Regulatory Guide 1.75 is not applicable in this instance for separating Decay Heat Removal Service (DHRS) and Steam Generator Auxiliary Heat Removal System (SGAHRS) cabling in the same division. However, for good engineering practices, the project commits to provide a minimum physical separation of five feet between DHRS and SGAHRS cabling of the same division, thus providing added conservatism.

This consnitment has been discussed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's '

staff reviewer on March 30, 1983, as an acceptable resolution to Safety Evaluation Report open item 2, physical separation of DHRS and SGAHRS cabling.
