Welds on Bergen & Patercon Sway Struts
Dear Mr. Seidle :
This letter provides an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) matter concerning welds on Bergen & Paterson sway struts. This matter was initially reported by Mr. Earl Creel of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) to Mr. William Johnson of the Nuclear Regulatory Com-mission, Region IV, on February 24, 1983.
A recent KG&E Quality Assurance surveillance of sway struts revealed that some struts which should have been identical had different weld configurations. Since these were vendor welds, a representative from Bergen & Paterson came to the job site to compare the weld configuration to the configuration on the design drawings. Of the forty struts in question, twelve were found to have welds not shown on the drawings. In addition, some welds were identified to have possible slag inclusion, porosity and/or voids. Nonconformance reports have been initiated to document the nonconformances and to provide appropriate control measures.
The status of the evaluation and resolution of this matter will be reported to you on or before May 27, 1983.
