Duke Power Company McGuire Nuclear Station Supplemental Response to IE Inspection Report 50-369/83-12 and 50-370/83-16 Deviation Item A During the conference call on May 2, 1983 with Mr. T. E. Conlon and Mr. W. H. Miller, both of the NRC, it was noted that the proposed arrangement for the annulus sprinkler system was acceptable. This system arrangement was described in the April 14, 1983 letter from H. B. Tucker to J. P. O'Reilly.
The NRC is concerned with possible water damage to Class lE electrical equipment in the annulus due to leakage or rupture of the fire protection piping. An annulus area pipe rupture and flooding analysis has been conducted which addresses this concern. The results confirm that water spray due to pipe rupture will not have an adverse effect on Class lE electrical equipment because adequate shielding has been provided for the equipment which is subject to spray.
It was also found that the potential build-up of two inches of water on the annulus floor cannot adversely affect the Class'lE electrical equipment since none of this equipment is located less than 1.5 feet above the floor.
Deviation Item C The NRC is concerned that emergency lighting fixtures are not included in the QA program or that an independent inspection of the as-built conditions was conducted to ensure that the lights satisfied the design requirements.
The Construction Department was responsible for installing the lighting system.
A station procedure was prepared in December, 1982 for testing of the Unit 2 emergency lights. This test procedure was performed on February 17-19, 1983 by Operations personnel to verify that the appropriate number of fixtures were installed in their proper location and initially tested.
The lighting system was turned over to Nuclear Production on February 20, 1983.
This test procedure, Unit 2 Emergency Lighting Annual Test, will be performed annually and therefore ensures the existence of a maintenance / testing program.
