1. Field' Testing / Cross-Checking of Personnel TLD's Personn'el TLD. cross-check program can be achieved through doutele badging of a certain fraction of personnel involved .~ -

in jobs that result in a range,of exposures. For this reason, about 5 to 10 individuals from H.P. staff shall be chosen, and they will wear the additional-TLD just like p their regular TLD (preferably at about the same location).

2. Spiking of TLO',s to Known Radiation Fields

a. *The* unexposed TLD badges can be exposed using three

.. different methods. The methods are t,he calibration

. board,.celibration well, and the work bench area. When I using the calibration well, or work bench area, the source-to-badge distance can be adjusted to obtain different exposures. There are other sources available to be used with the work bench or calibration board.

NOTE The faces of the badge.s must be,toward the source.

If the Panasonic Reader is out of use at the time of the calibration check, do not expose the Panasonic badges until the reader is operative.

DESCRIPTION OF INSTRUMENT The RADeCO Low Voluine Air Sampler is a compact unit used Gor obtaining a grap sampic of a large volume of air which is monitored for particulate and radiciodine airborne radioactivity. The model H80SV1 raay be operated at a fixed flow rate or variable flow adjustable between zero snd approximately

90% of maximum. .

F. OPERATION OF INSTRUMENT

1. Remove'the outer ring on the sampler head by turning it counter clockwise and install a 47mm glass fiber filter into the holder. Be sure the filter paper ceats properly at all points or it may tear the paper. Replace the outer ring by turning it clockwise. .

2. Ope.n the char. coal cartridge holder by turning the inter ring counterclockwise, and place a charcoal cartridge into holder, no' ting'the direction of flow through the cartridge.

Replace the inter ring by turning clockwise, and make sure

that both rings'are securely together and Tight.

3. Turn the VAR-OFF-HI switch to the VAR position and adjust the flow rate by rotating the control knob labeled FLOW ADJ.

'G . CALIBRATION The sampler is calibrated once every (3) three mo.nths or as often as needed using the RADeCO Air Flow Calibrator, model C-828.

1. Place a. charcoal cartr'idge in the sampler as though r l preparing to take a sample. -
2. Remove outer ring a.nd placc a 47mm glass fiber filter into holder. In place of outer ring, screw the RADeC.O Venturi Tube into it's place. ,
3. Plug sampler in and turn VAR-OFF-HI switch to HIGH and allow a warm-up time of_2 minutes. ,
4. Connect the Venturi Tube to the *AC outlet of the Air Flow s Calibrator, making certain $he IN'AME on the calibrator is l open.

6. Turn the VAR-OFF-HI switch to VAR and then adjust the control knob labeled Flow ADJ. until a rotameter, reading of 3 CFM is.observbd. Take a reading from the Air Flow 1.

Calibrator meter pointer and record on Data Package

7. If the observed reading is 3 CFM i .3, lock the retaining nut on the rotameter screw down and place a drop of

" correction fluid" or similiar substance on the threads.

This creates a seal to prevent further adjustment from 3, being made without detection. If readings are not 3 CFM\ .

, repeat steps G.5 and G.6.

B. Remove the charcoal cartridge from its holder and place'the sample head back together. Rbpeat steps G.3 through G.7 for the. glass fiber filter only-and re' cord results'on Data-Package 1.

9. Remove Venturi Tube and replace outer ring on sample head.'

. Record any adjustments made in the MAINTENANCE PERFORMED section of Data Package 1 and replace the calibration sticker.with a new one bearing this test date and the next a

E. DESCRIPTION ON INSTRUMENT r

Th'e RASCAL, Model PRS-1 is a complete counting system consisting i of a variable high voltage supply, charge sensitive input amplifier,' scaler, ratemeter, timer, six decade digital liquid crystal display and a self-contained battery supply. The RASCAL provides a single channel pulse height analyzer. All circuits are solid state with extensive use of CMOS integrated circuits to enhance reliability. All integrated circuits are plugged in for l

ease of maintenance.

2. Internal
a. Scaler (Calibration Board): A two position switch used to select scaler display. In the STORE position the e data displayed is updated at'the completion of the timed cycle. In the INCREMENT position, the data is displayed or updated', continuously.
b. Calibration (Calibration Board): A two position switch used to select the calibration function when the

, instrument is used in the ratemeter mode. When the switch is in the IN position, the three calibration switches'are operational. When the switch is in the OUT position, the calibration function is not operational. In this' case,.the display is counts per' minute.

c. Calibration Function Switches'(Calibration Boar'd):

Three rotary switches'used to calibrate the instrument to the detector used with the instrument.

d. Legend Switches (Display Board): Eight switches that

, are used to select the legend or legends to be displayed when the instrument is operated in the ratemeter mode. The selections are (1) decimal point 1; (2) decimal-point 2; (3) decimal point 3; (4) CPS; (5) R/hr; (6) mr/hr; (7) CPM and (8) nRem/hr. When the switch is in the ON position, the legend will be displayed. When the switch is in the "ORF" or " OP.EN" position the legend will not be displayed.

e. "VCO" Frequency (Main Board): A potentiometer, adjustment for the high voltage display.,
f. "VCO" OFF Set (Main Bosed): A potentiometer adjustment for the high voltage display.
g. Battery OK Adj. (Main Board): A potentiometer ayjustment for the "BATT OK" display.
h. Amplifier Gain. Control (P-8B Board): A trimmer adju,stment f or amplifier gain adj ustment.

3. Turn the function selector switch to " RATE A", observe the display, ensure that "BATT OK" is displayed on the display.

If "BATT OK" is not displayed, then connect the battery charger to the instrument if rechargeable batteries are used. If rechargeable batteries are not used, replace with five new'D-cell batteries. 's

- NOTE The instrument will not o'perate when the

. batteries are being charged. -

f. Disconnect power supply and install batteries. Return instrument chassis to it's can. ~ Remove high voltage card (P201A). .
g. Capacitively couple'the MP-1 to the detector connector of the RASCAL.

h. Adjust the input threshold potentiometer, R603 to 10 mVolts.
i. Adjust the MP-1 to 100 Kcpm. Calculate the total accumulated counts for O.5, 1, 2 and 5 minutes.

J. Place the selector switch in the 0.5 minutes position and allow the instrument to count for that time r period. Observe reading and record on Data Package 2, l

Data Sheet 2, in the "As Found" column.

k. Place selector switch' in the 1 minute position and repeat step H.1.J.
